Innovation is a valuable aspect of Europe: it can help Europe conquer the economic crisis and secure its future in global economy. One way to support innovation is through universities and its particular role in the innovation process. Crucial for that role are the universities’ technology transfer offices (TTO), whose operation is the subject of this LERU advice paper.

The paper is split into two parts. Firstly, it focusses on the role and relevance of the TTO in academia and presents a model of three stage development. Secondly, the governance and organization of the TTO are analysed. Lastly, ten critical success factors (CSF) for an effective TTO operation are identified.
