President Barroso has today appointed the Commission's first Chief Scientific Advisor, Professor Anne Glover. Professor Glover will provide high-level and independent scientific advice throughout all stages of policy development and delivery. The Chief Scientific Advisor will provide advice directly to the President, and will give regular updates on major scientific and technological developments.

On 5 and 6 December 2011 the European Commission will convene an annual Innovation Convention to discuss the state of the Innovation Union in a form of high-level political and stakeholder dialogue involving Ministers, Members of the European Parliament, business leaders, bankers, venture capitalists, scientists and innovators. LERU is delighted to announce that it has been invited to organise a fringe session at the EC Innovation Convention.

Heidelberg University has made an essential contribution to shaping the excellent reputation Germany enjoys in the fields of science and research. Federal President Christian Wulff highlighted this fact in his address during the 2011 Annual Celebration. The occasion marked the close of the year of festivities honouring the university’s 625th anniversary and simultaneously welcomed the start of the new academic year.

Munich, 30 September 2011 – A new chapter in the ongoing story of LMU’s HighTechCampus in Großhadern/Martinsried began yesterday, as the foundation stone was laid for the new Biomedical Center (BMC). Some 125 million Euros have been allocated to cover the cost of construction of the BMC, which incorporates the Center for Applied Cell Research. A further 19 million Euros will be spent on equipping the new facilities.

The 2011 Nobel Prize for medicine goes to Jules Hoffmann (University of Strasbourg) and American immunologist Bruce Beutler, who share it with Canadian Ralph Steinman for their revolutionary findings concerning the activation of the immune system.
