Prof Peter Piot keynote speaker at LERU’s Spring Reception

On Thursday 22 May 2014, the League of European Research Universities (LERU) held its Spring Reception, entitled “Old and new challenges in global health research”.
Almost 100 people attended the event which took place at the International Press Centre in Brussels. The reception provided a unique opportunity for LERU’s Brussels-based network of people and organisations to mingle while being briefed about a subject of topical interest.
Keynote speaker at this event was Professor Peter Piot. Prof Piot is Director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Professor of Global Health. He is also Chair of the European Forum for Forward Looking Activities of the European Commission. Furthermore, Professor Piot is a former Under Secretary-General of the United Nations and former Executive Director of the UN specialised agency UNAIDS. He co-discovered the Ebola virus in Zaire in 1976.
Respondent to Prof. Piot's presentation was Mr. Robert-Jan Smits, Director-General of DG Research & Innovation, European Commission.
LERU’s Secretary-General, Prof Kurt Deketelaere, introduced both speakers and shortly highlighted LERU’s future agenda and activities.
